5-day road trip in Gunma 「Day 1 : Mt Akagi」
Our family has a tradition of venturing to a new prefecture in Japan twice a year. After our delightful explorations around Mount Fuji in April 2023 and through Gifu in October 2023, we felt the urge for another escape from Tokyo's hustle and bustle. During the Golden Week, we were looking forward to setting our sights on Gunma Prefecture, excited to uncover its charms and forge new memories together.
As usual, we hit the road on Friday night after work, ensuring we'd be ready on the spot by early morning. We opted to avoid the highway, taking a leisurely 3-hour and 30-minute drive covering 110 kilometers. Along the way, we stopped twice for coffee breaks and to switch drivers. Of course, like always, our daughter fell asleep shortly after leaving Tokyo, exhausted from her day at school.
📍 Kakumanbuchi Marshland
Picture yourself near the top of Mount Akagi, where the serene Kakumanbuchi Marshland unfolds at an elevation of 1,360 meters above sea level. It's a tranquil haven, stretching 500 meters and adorned with lush marshes and alpine greenery.
In summer, Japanese azaleas create a captivating scene, while autumn paints the landscape with vibrant hues. As you stroll along the leisurely 30-minute boardwalk encircling the Kakumanbuchi pool, you'll be embraced by the timeless beauty of this enchanting sanctuary.
Well, this is what I expected to find based on my online research - yet, as we stepped into the Kakumanbuchi Marshland, it became apparent that nature had its own timeline !!
Although the plants were still shaking off the winter chill and hadn't quite embraced spring yet, we didn't mind at all. We took a leisurely hour-long stroll, breathing in the crisp mountain air and relishing the peaceful silence that surrounded us.

📍 akagi shrine
just a short 5-minute drive from the marshland, we arrived at Akagi Shrine, a picturesque lakeside sanctuary perched on the edge of Lake Onuma. Its striking vermilion hue against the serene blue waters is just beautiful. Dedicated to Akagi Daimyojin, the deity of the lake and revered as a power spot, the shrine hosts festivals throughout the year, including a vibrant summer festival with horseback archery and lantern ceremonies.
Akagi Shrine holds a special place in the hearts of many, offering blessings for expectant mothers and newborns, as well as hosting traditional events like the Seven-Five-Three Festival. The shrine's serene ambiance and beautiful surroundings make it a popular destination year-round.
Located near the peak of Mount Akagi, the shrine is easily accessible by car via well-paved routes. Moreover, visitors will appreciate the convenience of free parking available nearby. After exploring the shrine, you can enjoy a delicious meal at one of the many restaurants in the area, offering a taste of local cuisine amidst the calm natural scenery.

Their menu is filled with comforting classics like rice bowls, set meals, and noodles, along with freshly baked treats like salt-grilled rock fish and grilled manju available at the storefront.
During our visit, we savoured a delightful meal, including a mouthwatering cutlet bowl, a steaming bowl of udon, and a kid-friendly portion of curry, all for around ¥1,500.

📍 a stroll at Akagi Onuma
We wrapped up our afternoon with a lovely stroll by Onuma Lake, soaking in its peaceful vibes and enjoying the simple pleasures of family time.
The lake was alive with laughter as kids skipped stones across the water, while nearby coffee shops and restaurants buzzed with activity.
Our daughter had the biggest grin as she savored her ice cream cone, while my husband and I couldn't help but smile at her joy.
📍 Nango Onsen “Shakunage no Yu”
After spending about an hour taking in the sights and sounds, we decided to treat ourselves to a relaxing soak at an onsen. Following our refreshing dip, we enjoyed a delicious family dinner right there at the onsen.
